Nothing but grand–this is the best description for this year’s celebration of Angeles City’s annual festival, Fiestang Kuliat. This festivity observed every October dates back to the 1990’s when the Fiesta was first conceived and celebrated.

History of Fiestang Kuliat

In 1992, via an executive order from then Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, Angeles City’s month-long festival in October was established. Fiestang Kuliat was named after the city’s original name “Barrio Kuliat” (kuliat or culiat is a woody vine that was abundant in Angeles before early settlers came in). This fiesta encompasses the feast day celebrations of the city’s patron saints, the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary (La Naval Fiesta), the Lord of the Holy Sepulcher (Apu Mamacalulu Fiesta), as well as Holy Guardian Angels (Pista ng mga Anghel dela Guardia). Other highlights of the fiesta are cultural and sports activities, food festivals, as well as the famous Tigtigan Terakan Keng Dalan (TTKD). TTKD was also conceived to uplift the spirits of the Angelenos who were devastated during the onslaught of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. This street party, known as the City’s version of the Mardi Gras or Oktoberfest is also a celebration of the Kapampangan’s unwavering resiliency even after facing great tragedies such as the volcano eruption.

Fiestang Kuliat 2014

More than two decades of celebrating the city’s festival, Fiestang Kuliat 2014 can be claimed as the biggest, longest, and grandest fiesta that the City has ever witnessed. This year’s theme is “Abe-abe King Pamananam, Saup Saup keng Pamamupul!”

The kick-off for the fiesta was as early as the last week of September where the city government, headed by Mayor Pamintuan and the Angeles City Tourism Office announced a total of 70 events for the whole month of October. These activities were categorized into three different clusters: religious, socio-civic, and cultural. Other than the feast days and TTKD, the activities that were highlighted in the event are MarQuee Mall’s “Big Bite: Northern Food Festival” featuring the revival of the “Sisig Festival”, SM City Clark’s annual PyroFest Competition, as well as sports events such as Arnis Festival, and Mamialung Tamu.

Ever since its first celebration in 1992, Fiestang Kuliat continues to attract thousands of locals and tourists alike who would want to experience the month-long merriment that only happens in Angeles City.
